Taking action for our environment

We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and playing our part in addressing climate change and protecting nature. Environmental sustainability is embedded in decision-making across our operations, from how we manage our carbon emissions and source goods and services to the way we design and operate our workplace.
We are working towards net zero by 2050, with a 2030 target to halve carbon emissions across all scopes from our 2019/20 baseline. Alongside reducing our own impact, we engage our people in environmental initiatives, work with organisations that share our ambitions and look for opportunities to create positive change beyond our business.

Taking climate action

We are committed to achieving net zero by 2050 and are focused on our 2030 target to halve our carbon emissions across all scopes from our 2019/20 baseline, verified by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), which will mean we are on track.

Our carbon emissions data is audited by a third-party in accordance with ISO14064-1:2018 and our Achilles Carbon Zero certification, which requires progress against reduction targets, is ongoing.

Our Responsible Business Board reviews our performance and the roll out of action plans across the firm.

Creating connection with the environment

Our Green Impact Group aims to engage colleagues with environmental issues and provides a forum to share ideas and create experiences that drive a culture of sustainability including volunteering opportunities that support nature restoration projects.

Recent GIG initiatives include:

  • Practical tips campaign around Stop Food Waste Day with our caterers Baxter Storey
  • An art competition, for children and adults, focused on capturing the joys of nature
  • Communications campaigns highlighting the sustainability features of our building including guided office tours
  • A bicycle repair workshop with Westminster Wheels, a local social enterprise that trains and employs young people as bike mechanics.
  • Volunteering with Moo canoes clearing litter from the River Lea and the London Clean Air Initiative enhancing the green space of a local school to encouraging wellbeing and biodiversity.
  • A toy collection with donations going to Little Village and Homestart Westminster.

Partnering for wider impact

Legal Sustainability Alliance

We are members of the Legal Sustainability Alliance (LSA), not-for-profit sustainability network that aim to equip and empower law firms to take effective action on the climate and nature crises.

Our Responsible Business team regularly contributes to the development of resources which can be found on the LSA’s resource library and includes the results of a recent collaboration: a practical guide to sustainable procurement.

We are signatories of the Sustainable City Charter, a partnership based on a shared goal to reduce operational carbon emissions to ensure Westminster becomes a net zero city by 2040.

The Charter provides a common collaborative framework for decarbonising and driving the sustainability of Westminster’s buildings. Participants are part of a growing network of local organisations with the opportunity to help shape and develop the Charter in the years to come.

We are one of 140+ signatories of the Greener Litigation Pledge, a voluntary commitment by solicitors’ firms, barristers’ chambers, e-discovery providers and other disputes professionals, all with the shared aspiration to minimise the effect of our services on the environment.

Office sustainability

Our move to 22 Baker Street reflects our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and creating a more sustainable workplace. The building has achieved BREEAM Excellent certification, recognising the sustainability credentials of both the development and fit out, and supporting our wider net zero ambitions.

22 Baker Street refit: Facts and figures

  • We gave thousands of materials a second life during our office fit out, including more than 30,000 feet of raised access flooring.
  • Every piece of furniture was selected with carbon footprint, recycled content and end-of-life recyclability in mind.
  • 100% of our lightbulbs are energy-efficient LEDs.
  • Our heating, ventilation and air conditioning system uses natural heat recovery and water-based cooling to reduce energy use and avoid harmful gases.
  • Smart building technology helps us monitor and manage energy consumption across different parts of the office.
  • Photovoltaic panels generate up to 13,000 kWh of renewable energy each year, enough to power approximately 125 laptops for a full working year.
